Abstract Algebra
Abstract Algebra study offers basic knowledge of sets, groups, rings, and fields. It provides a
deeper understanding of the structure of mathematical systems. During the study a wide variety
of methods of proof essential to this branch of mathematics is developed and used. This study
strengthens the student's background for advanced work in mathematics. The study covers mapping
and operations, introduction to groups-permutation and symmetry group, equivalence relations,
congruence and divisibility, groups-elementary properties, generators, cosets, isomorphisms,
introduction to rings, integral domains, and fields.
Educational Planning
The purpose of this study is to develop a clearly stated curriculum for a Bachelor of Science
degree program at Empire State College that will serve as a guide for the student’s studies at
the College. This study will allow the student to construct a program that responds to the
student’s personal, professional and academic needs and interests. In order to document a prior
learning that is to be evaluated for credit, the student, with the help of the mentor, will
write essays for their prior experience. This process will culminate in the development of a
degree program rationale that will clearly show the scope of the studies at Empire State
College. The study will be supervised by the mentor.
Analytic Geometry
This study is designed for students who wish to expand their knowledge in analytic geometry. It includes
such topics as plane analytic geometry, vectors, lines, circle, and conic sections in the plane, the,
transformation of coordinates, curve sketching, polar coordinates and parametric equations, and topics
in solid analytic geometry.
Basic Digital Cartoon Making
This study is designed for students who are interested in digital advertising, e-commerce,
digital filmmaking, early childhood development and education, literature, computer graphics,
animations, and those who like cartoons. It is designed for those who wish to examine the basics
of digital three-dimensional animation, and wish to apply fundamental concepts and methods to
make a real cartoon. Through an innovative approach and visualization, the student will explore
animation principles, and the structure of the 3D world. The study will culminate in a multistage
project: short story writing, designing the environment, choice of characters, adding sound, and
cartoon making.
Calculus I
Using an online tutorial and course management system for assignments, this study is designed for
students who wish to examine and apply the fundamental concepts and methods of calculus I. It
includes such topics as functions and models, four ways to represent a function, graphing
calculators and computers, limits and rates of change, continuity, derivatives, differentiation
formulas, derivatives of trigonometric functions, applications of differentiation, maximum and
minimum values, how derivatives affect the shape of a graph, limits at infinity. During the study
the student will learn the principles of problem solving, do applied projects, and do graphing
with calculus and calculators.

for students who wish to examine and apply the fundamental concepts and methods of calculus II.
It includes such topics as integral and their applications, inverse functions, exponential and
logarithmic functions, inverse trigonometric functions, techniques of integration, trigonometric
and improper integrals, and infinite series.
Calculus III
This study is designed for students who wish to examine and apply the fundamental concepts and
methods of calculus III. It includes such topics as parametric equations, polar coordinates,
sequences, series, vectors, partial derivatives, multiple integrals and second-order differential
equations.
College Algebra II
Using an online tutorial and course management system for assignments, this study is designed
for students who wish to develop their decision making skills, to improve their logical and
critical thinking, and to expand their algebraic skills. It includes such topics as systems of
linear equations in two and three variables, matrices, linear programming, exponents and
polynomials, scientific notation, rational expressions and functions, radicals and rational
exponents, quadratic equations and inequalities, exponential and logarithmic functions,
sequences and series, counting and probability. Students will use an online tutorial and course
management system for assignments.
College Geometry
This study is designed for students who wish to expand their skills in geometry. It covers the
important principles and real-world applications of geometry. Through integrated activities and
tools this study promotes hands-on application and discovery. The study includes such topics as
line and angle relationships, parallel lines, triangles, quadrilaterals, similar triangles,
circles, locus and concurrence, areas of polygons and circles, surfaces and solids, and
introduction to analytic geometry.
College Mathematics
Using an online tutorial and course management system for assignments, this study is designed
for students who wish to learn the use of mathematics as an everyday tool, and to get better
prepared for their individual career. Principles and applications of mathematical topics around
us will be covered through discussions and problem solving. This study is beneficial for students
majoring in community and human services, social theory, business, labor, cultural, historical
and educational studies, as well as in arts, human development, science, mathematics, technology
and other concentrations.
Computer Applications
Computer Applications study is designed to educate students to use computers effectively for
business and personal applications. Its problem-solving feature prepares the student to analyze
data, to develop critical thinking, and to discover effective solutions in real-life situations
and in business problems. The study includes general concepts of Microsoft Office. Topics
covered in this study are: creating documents with Microsoft Word, insert and format headers
and footers, using graphics and tables, create mailing labels using mail merge, creating an Excel
workbook, construct formulas for mathematical operations, create a pie chart and a chart sheet,
using functions, Access databases and tables, create and use a query, create and use a form,
create a database using a template, organize database objects, designing presentation with
Microsoft PowerPoint, create headers and footers, enhancing a presentation with animation,
tables, and charts, and customize slide backgrounds and themes.
Data Mining
Data mining is designed to search for hidden information and undetected patterns in a database.
Exploratory analyses uncover valuable information useful in marketing and in scientific fields
by finding unseen correlations. Data mining is of foremost importance in the current world of
business, computer science, and statistics. Practical examples and business case studies combined
with student projects will be at the core of this advanced study.
Database Applications Development
This study focuses on the context of applications development, and to familiarize students with the syntax
of the common language used by the most important database developers and database systems Oracle and Microsoft.
Students will complete an individual project involving the design and implementation of a database.
Database Systems
This study focuses on understanding the use and management of Database Applications Development, Database Systems, will be of interest to
those whose concentration is in computer science, computer information systems, or computer information
technology. The context of database management, database analysis, database design, and implementation
learning will be explored. Students will complete an individual project involving the design and
implementation of a database.
Differential Equations
This study offers basic knowledge of differential equations, and Laplace transforms. It
includes such topics as first-order differential equations, second-order and higher-order
linear differential equations, variable coefficents, systems of linear differential equations,
scalar approach and matrix approach, Laplace transforms, and numerical solution of
differential equations.
Advanced Digital Crime and Digital Terrorism
This study focuses on the technical aspects of digital crime, and the behavioral and social
aspects of computer hackers, virus writers, terrorists and other offenders. Using real life
examples, case studies and projects, students will examine in depth the history, development,
extent and types of digital crime and digital terrorism as well as current legislation and
law enforcement practices designed to prevent, investigate and prosecute these crimes.

E-Commerce Basics
This study strengthens and reinforces the necessary computer skills for everyday use in career advancement. It is useful for all professionals including, but not limited to, business professionals, educators, service provider professionals, healthcare professionals, and people in their own business or employed by others.
Using the computer, the problem-solving feature of this study prepares the student to analyze data, to develop critical thinking, and to discover effective solutions in real-life situations and in business problems. It will teach the practical concepts people need to use computers as a tool to accomplish goals and to achieve objectives in their career. By placing the student in a real business situation, the course offers ways to apply the computer in a creative manner to resolve challenges and to make meaningful decisions. It will teach students to deal not only with immediate problems, but also with the inevitable "what if" scenarios that occur in everyday business conditions. Real life examples, case problems and classroom activities will provide additional practice in a real-world context. Keeping up with currently common practice in the corporate world, group projects will allow students to develop their own capabilities and to work as a team.

Enterprise Systems Architecture - Graduate level
The course offers broad systems perspective that provides a holistic approach to systems architecture. The courses covers
the latest in new and emerging technologies. All instructional contents are designed to give students the appropriate
level and coverage of technical topics needed for ongoing professional success. The learning material are in simple terms
to provide a holistic approach to both hardware and software.
Essentials of Information Technology: Programming and Networking - Graduate level
This course in information technology develops foundational skills in computer system and basic computer
programming. Students will learn Introduction to computer information technology and basic programming:
Architecture of digital computers, design of algorithms for solving various problems, and basic skills
in computer programming. Algorithm design, flow charting, and debugging; elements of good programming style.
Geometry and Its Applications
This study is designed for students who wish to major in mathematics and/or are prospective
teachers. It covers Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometry. Discovery approach guides students
to their own conclusions. The study includes such topics as points, lines, segments, and angles,
triangles, quadrilaterals, and circles, trigonometry, coordinates, and vectors, transformations
in geometry, non-Euclidean geometry, an introduction to three dimensional geometry, parallelism
in space, spherical geometry.

The gained knowledge will prepares the student to analyze data, to develop critical thinking, and to discover
effective solutions in real-life situations and in business problems. Topics covered in this study are:
essential computer concepts, file management, web browsers, search for information, search for study materials
in the ESC library, Windows 8, creating, editing and formatting documents with Word 2013, working with formulas,
function and charts with Excel 2013, integrating Word and Excel, creating a presentation in PowerPoint 2013.
Introduction to Information Management
Introduction to Information Management focuses on understanding the use and management of information as
an organizational resource, will be of interest to those whose concentration is in computer science,
management, or business. The impact of advances in information technology in the context of organizational
decision-making and the potential of an effective management information system to contribute to
organizational learning will be explored.
Introduction to Website Development
This study is designed to educate students the principles of website development using HTML.
Topics covered in this course are: basic page structure, color, working with text, working
with links, working with images, working with multimedia, creating lists, using tables,
developing frames, employing forms, positioning page elements, and HTML for e-mail. Weekly
hands-on projects will be assigned.
Prerequisite: Hands-on familiarity with the computer.
Linear Algebra
The Linear Algebra study covers linear equations in linear algebra, matrix algebra, determinants,
vector spaces, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, orthogonality and least squares, symmetric matrices
and quadratic forms. During this study the following real life examples will be covered:
determinants in analytic geometry, space flight and control systems, dynamical systems and
spotted owls, readjusting the North American datum, multi-channel image processing, the platonic
solids, and the Berlin airlift.
Management Information Systems - Graduate level
The Management Information Systems course is about the need to manage IS/IT. It is based upon the belief that information systems and technology (IS/IT) is one of the drivers of business in the twenty-first century. This technology is providing new sources of revenue and opportunities to dramatically change a firm's cost structure. Information technology enables organizations to develop radically new structures such as value networks, in which a local company undertakes key core activities itself and outsources noncore tasks to partners in the network. The technology has led to new business models and new types of businesses. IS/IT has intertwined closely with corporate strategy.
Management Information Systems - Undergraduate level
This study focuses on understanding the use and management of information as an organizational
resource, will be of interest to those whose concentration is in computer science, management,
or business. The impact of advances in information technology in the context of organizational

Mathematical Proofs
As a bridge from introductory to advanced level course in mathematics, students will learn what constitutes a rigorous mathematical proof, how to evaluate the soundness of a proof, and how to write a new proof. Specifically, students will review the basics of logic, will develop ability to understand mathematical systems expressed as systems of axioms and definitions, and will learn the techniques of direct proof, proof by contradiction, finding counterexamples, and mathematical induction. Students will also develop ability to express mathematical ideas clearly in writing, and will comprehend material in which mathematical symbols are used freely using ideas drawn from calculus and other elementary mathematical subjects.
Mathematical Statistics
In this upper level calculus-based probability and statistics course, students will study topics including descriptive statistics, probability models and related concepts and applications, statistical estimation, and hypothesis testing.
Mathematics for Business
Mathematics for Business presents math skills and knowledge that can be applied in solving financial
problems. The core topics include business finance, trade and cash discounts, markup and markdown,
business statistics, wages and payroll, simple interest and simple discount, compound interest,
future value, and present value, mortgages, sinking funds, and amortization, depreciation,
inventory, insurance, business insurance, life insurance, annuities, taxes, stocks and bonds.
Students will also gain an understanding of financial instruments and terminology used in
business finance. This serves as a foundation for further studies in business, management,
accounting, and finance. Students will gain skills to manage personal finance.
Mathematics for Game Programmers
Mathematics for Game Programmers presents math skills and knowledge that can be applied in game
programmers. The core topics include points and lines, parabolas, circles and spheres, degrees
versus radians, trigonometric functions, vector operations, matrix operations, and
transformations. The study serves as a good foundation for further study in computer
programming and computer graphics.

This workshop is designed for students who wish to learn the use of mathematics as an everyday
tool, and to get better prepared for their career. Principles and practical applications of
mathematics will be covered through discussions and problem solving. This workshop is beneficial

cultural, historical and educational studies, as well as in arts, human development, mathematics,

Number Theory
The Number Theory study provides a simple account of classical number theory plus the historical
background to show the subject's evolution from antiquity to the present. It covers the following
topics: Mathematical Induction, the Binomial Theorem, Divisibility Theory in the integers, the
Euclidean Algorithm, the Diophantine Equation ax + by = c, primes and their distribution, the
Theory of Congruences, Fermat's Theorem, number-theoretic functions, Euler's generalization of
Fermat's Theorem, primitive roots and indices, and the Quadratic Reciprocity Law.
Mathematics in Native American Civilization
This study is designed for students who wish to learn the use of mathematics as an everyday tool,
and to get better prepared for their career. Students will explore how Native Americans, such as
the Iroquois, Algonquians, Mayas, Aztecs and Incas used mathematics across centuries in the diverse
aspects of their civilization, art, architecture, construction, and everyday life. The discovery
will lead the student to develop interest in the universal application of mathematics. This study
is equally beneficial to students majoring in community and human services, social theory, business,
labor, cultural, historical and educational studies, as well as in arts, human development, science,
mathematics, technology and other concentrations. The topics will include real numbers and variables,
ratio and proportion, measurements, geometry, topics in algebra, and problem solving.
Precalculus
Using an online tutorial and course management system for assignments, this study is designed
for students who wish to examine and apply the fundamental concepts and methods of precalculus.
It includes such topics as functions and their graphs, polynomial and rational functions,
exponential and logarithmic functions, trigonometric functions, applications of trigonometry,
relations and conic sections, systems of equations and inequalities, integer functions and
probability.
Programming Fundamentals
Programming Fundamentals is designed for students who are interested in computer science and
in computer programming. The study uses program visualization to introduce students to
fundamentals of programming with objects, methods, decision statements, loops, recursion,
and problem solving. The core topics include program design and implementation, built-in
functions and expressions, simple control structures, classes, objects, methods, and parameters,
events and event handling, functions, boolean functions, definite and indefinite loops,
recursion, lists and list processing, variables and revisiting inheritance. The course serves
as a good foundation for further study in C++ and Java programming, and Introduction to Computer
Science.

Secondary Mathematics from an Advanced Viewpoint
This study is designed for those students who wished to explore secondary school mathematics from a deeper viewpoint in order to become an effective teacher. The study reviews current methods of teaching mathematics, relationships of basic concepts, role of technology in teaching secondary mathematics. The study covers the following topics: the challenge of teaching, planning for instruction, teaching more effectively, the role of problem-solving, using technology to enhance mathematics instruction, the scientific calculator, the graphing calculator, dynamic geometry using the geometer's sketchpad, assessing the understanding of mathematics, developing number concepts, and developing understanding of numeration.
Statistics
This study is designed for students who wish to examine and apply the fundamental concepts and
methods of both descriptive and inferential statistics. It includes such topics as data
collection, organizing and summarizing data, describing the relation between two variables,
probability, the binomial probability distribution, the normal probability distribution, “t”
distribution, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing. Computers and related software will be
used throughout the course.
System Design and Information Management - Graduate level
This course covers the foundations, concepts, tools, and techniques involved in system analysis,
design, implementation, and maintenance of enterprise computer applications. Topics include systems’
life cycle concepts; tools and techniques to manage information systems projects; introduction to
the management of system investigation and analysis; determining system requirements using process,
logic, and data modeling; conceptual and detailed design of system key components; criteria for
optimum hardware selection; systems implementation and maintenance. Further, the course addresses
information management, data warehouse and data mart utilization, information security and data
quality concepts, and how to leverage data and modern business intelligence to deliver RIO for a business.
Technology for Digital Marketing
This study is designed to educate students to view digital marketing strategically, bring together
marketing, sales and operations functions. The study will show how to implement a more iterative,
measurable, and repeatable approach to digital marketing, how to integrate the full strategic toolkit:
social media, pay-per-click, Google AdWords, SEO, site usability, Google Analytics, audience analysis,
CRM, lead generation, site navigation optimization, and more.
Technology in Mathematics Education
This study is designed to gain competence in selection, evaluation, and utilization of various
instructional technologies in mathematics education. Application of new technologies to teaching
and learning will be emphasized along with performance-based activities in instructional design.
This study will provide the student with an understanding of learning models and the impact technology
can have toward enhancing and enriching the learning process. The use of technology tools for solving
a variety of problems, evaluating student performance, and implementing blended learning systems will
also be explored.
Theory of Computation
Theory of Computation is a capstone course for computer science. It is concerned with theoretical aspects
such as regular languages, finite automata, context-free languages, pushdown automata, the Church-Turing
thesis, Turing machines, decidability, the halting problem, time complexity, and P and NP classes.
Students will improve their ability to learn mathematics independently and improve their ability to create
proofs. Prerequisite (must complete before registering): Discrete Mathematics Assumptions about surrounding
courses: It is essential to know general methods of proof and have some prior experience with proving theorems.
To achieve this, the contents of Discrete Math taken at the advanced level are essential. A course in proofs
is recommended. Notes: Theory of Computation is usually a requirement for graduate school in Computer Science.
